San Rafael, California - January 15, 2018 - Marilyn Price, Founding Director of Trips for Kids, has been honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award for work helping at-risk youth discover themselves through the power of bicycles. The award, which comes with a $5,000 gift for the Marin County non-profit, was presented by the Center for Volunteer & Nonprofit Leadership (CVNL) at their 25th annual Heart of Marin Awards luncheon on Thursday, January 11, 2018. The event was hosted at the Marin Center in San Rafael.
This prestigious event brought together some 700 community leaders, volunteers, business members, and elected officials for a yearly ceremony that recognizes and appreciates the collective efforts of nonprofits across Marin County and the individual people who make a difference in their community. The event highlights a select few that have risen above their peers, particularly in the last year. Initial nominations were collected from the public in various categories, which were then voted upon by a volunteer committee. Trips for Kids Marin Board President, Chuck Lesem, was also nominated for the Excellence in Board Leadership Award.
Price's story started in 1988 when she took her first group of inner-city children from San Francisco on a mountain bike ride in the hills of Marin County, just over the Golden Gate Bridge. Since that day over 185,000 children have been on a mountain bike adventure with the 75 nationwide chapters of Trips for Kids. Over 36,000 Bay Area youth have experienced cycling programs through San Rafael-based Trips for Kids Marin.
"Many of the children served by Trips for Kids have never ventured beyond their neighborhood borders - the natural world is often simply out of reach to them," said Marilyn Price, "These rides offer profound experiences and for some, pivotal moments of self-discovery that can help tip the balance to a healthy and productive life." "Marilyn's work in building Trips for Kids into a national organization over the past 30 years has placed her in the spotlight as a leader and role model," said Patricia Gallery, Trips for Kids Marin board member. "She is an inspiration to the thousands of kids, volunteers, and supporters who have had a chance to ride or work with her." Marilyn Price stepped down as Executive Director in 2015 but remains on the Trips for Kids Marin Board of Directors. In 2017, led by new Executive Director Kim Baenisch, Trips for Kids created a new national non-profit focused specifically on supporting and growing the national chapter network and changed its Bay Area chapter name to Trips for Kids Marin.
A lifelong environmentalist, social activist and member of the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame, Price is credited with having pioneered the use of the mountain bike as a vehicle for change. The Trips for Kids programs combine lessons in personal responsibility, achievement, and environmental awareness through the development of practical skills and the simple act of having fun.
